Salary: £38,250 pro rata 3 days per week (plus 8% pension)


The Black Training and Enterprise Group (BTEG) is a national charity deliveringprogrammes for young black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) people aged 11-30 years to help them realise their full potential. We work collaboratively across the public, private and civil society sector, conduct action research, operate as a strategic partner for funders and provide a voice to government for BAME civil society organisations. We are a dynamic networking organisation connecting with over 1000 organisations in England.

In 2013 BTEG, in partnership with Clinks, established The Young Review. Following the publication of its report in 2014 BTEG provided support to the review’s Independent Advisory Group to take forward its recommendations. In 2018, The Young Review was relaunched as EQUAL and Iqbal Wahhab OBE was appointed as the independent chair.

This role will work to support EQUAL’s current three policy priority areas:

  • Prison and Probation (including the Youth Custody Service)
  • Policing of BAME young people
  • Youth justice system

Overarching responsibilities

We are seeking a proactive individual who is committed to ending race inequality in the criminal justice system and delivering on EQUAL’s priorities. The postholder will work closely with the EQUAL Chair, National Independent Advisory Group and government officials to understand the research and evidence on improving outcomes for BAME and Muslim offenders in the criminal justice system in order to develop policy positions and campaign priorities and advocate for these at all levels of government. They will maintain an overarching view of criminal justice policy and its impact on race equality and support the Chair and NIAG to interpret and respond to appropriately. You will produce policy papers, briefings, and newsletters. Liaise with the media and ensure information is disseminated to our stakeholders in collaboration with the EQUAL team.
